Thai massage is not only pressure

A tradition that, according to the legend, begins more than 2,500 years ago.

Knowledge carved in stone.
The lines along which energy flows.

  1. 01 · Jivaka

    The beginning: the Buddha's physician.

According to tradition, the father of this practice is Jivaka, the Buddha's physician, who lived more than 2,500 years ago. The knowledge came from India with Buddhist monks and developed in temples and at court.

  2. 02 · Wat Pho

    Knowledge carved in stone.

In 1832 King Rama III ordered knowledge of the body and massage to be carved into stone tablets and shown on the walls of Wat Pho temple. In 1955 the same temple opened the first school of traditional Thai medicine and massage.

  3. 03 · sen

The lines along which energy flows.

According to traditional Thai medicine, energy flows along lines called sen. The tradition speaks of 72,000 lines, and the massage relies on ten main ones (sen sib).

  4. 04 · 4 steps

    What one massage looks like.

Warming the body, deep rhythmic pressure on the deeper layers of soft tissue, assisted stretching and, to finish, gentle tapping and rocking. It is all done over a kimono, without oils or lotions.

  5. 05 · Reusi Dat Ton

    Exercise and self-massage.

Reusi Dat Ton is an ancient Thai technique of exercise and self-massage. Our therapist Daeng showed how to massage the neck and head as a guest on BAYAYOGA.

  6. 06 · UNESCO 2019

    Recognised world heritage.

In December 2019 UNESCO inscribed Nuad Thai, traditional Thai massage, on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It describes it as helping the body regain balance by opening the paths along which energy flows.
